Zumelle Castle

The Secrets of Zumelle Castle

Zumelle Castle, erected on a hill overlooking the Terche stream, preserves traces of its history dating back to the first century AD. During the barbarian invasions, it was refounded and expanded by the Goths. Legend has it that Genseric, who fled with Eudosia, settled in the castle where two twins were born, hence the name Zumelle. Rebuilt in 1311 by Rizzardo da Camino, the castle fell into disrepair but was restored in the 1960s. The central core, surrounded by a moat, has a 36-meter tower.

Today, the castle houses a medieval theme park, with a reconstructed village, artisanal workshops, and historical environments such as the tower house, the scriptorium, and the church dedicated to San Lorenzo.

In addition to medieval attractions, the surrounding area offers a visit to the church of San Donato and the Forest Botanical Garden, along with nature trails that allow visitors to explore the picturesque surrounding area.
